At Entavida Functional Healthcare we focus on autoimmune disorders and chronic inflammation, amongst other conditions. We understand the challenges of dealing with chronic illnesses such as Lyme disease and the impact of environmental factors on our health. Many patients with Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB) continue to experience lingering symptoms even after antibiotic drug therapy. This can be frustrating and debilitating, but it’s important to know that you don’t have to suffer in silence.
Recent research by multiple universities has shown that maladaptive immune responses may be responsible for persistent symptoms in LNB patients. In this study, most immune mediators were highly concentrated in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), the site of the infection. However, these responses resolved with antibiotic therapy, and associations between CSF cytokines and signs and symptoms of LNB were no longer observed.
What’s interesting is that subjective symptoms that persisted after antibiotic use were associated with increased levels of serum interferon-α (IFN-α), which were already observed at study entry and remained elevated at subsequent timepoints. The highest levels of IFN-α corresponded with severe disease, leading researchers to conclude that although the infection serves as the initial trigger, sequelae after antibiotic therapy are associated with unremitting systemic IFN-α levels, consistent with the pathogenic role of this cytokine in interferonopathies in other conditions.
This research highlights the importance of seeking help if you are concerned about chronic illness such as Lyme disease or environmental impacts on your health. If you are experiencing lingering symptoms or have been diagnosed with LNB, it’s crucial to work with a healthcare provider who understands the complexities of chronic illness and can provide a personalized treatment plan that addresses the root cause of your symptoms.
That’s why we’re excited to announce our upcoming complementary webinar, Why am I Still Sick? The Role of Incomplete Healing in Chronic Illness, taking place on June 1st at 6:00 PM Mountain. This webinar will provide valuable insights into the underlying causes of chronic illness and how to achieve optimal health and wellness. Our Chief Science Officer, Dr. David Ward, DC, MS will discuss functional healthcare approaches to autoimmune disorders, chronic inflammation, and post-COVID health restoration, as well as the latest research on the impact of environmental factors on our health.
